Love your teeth again

There are patients who come to our practice asking for veneers because they “hate” their teeth. It might surprise some of you to know that teeth are a very emotional issue for many of us and that understandably it may take someone a great deal of courage to finally come and admit how they feel.

Sometimes, of course, veneers might indeed be the very best solution for that particular patient. However, more often than not, there are other treatments which would give the patient the smile they dream of without the permanent irreversible loss of tooth enamel.

The three most common complaints that people usually have about their smile are

  • Discoloured/yellow-looking teeth
  • Irregular/crooked teeth
  • A combination of the above

Let’s look at the solutions for stained or discoloured teeth today.
These include one or more of the following
- a professional deep clean with removal of more superficial tea, coffee, tobacco stains from a hygienist
- tooth-whitening which will address some quite ‘deep’ stains and discolouration
- replacement of badly colour-matched or stained fillings to invisible new fillings
- replacement of old crowns with dark metal showing, or veneers past their shelf-life with state-of-the-art modern porcelain veneers or crowns which are practically indistinguishable from naturally beautiful teeth

Patients are genuinely amazed at how much better they feel about themselves simply by getting their own teeth whiter, brighter, ‘cleaner’-looking with professional tooth-whitening perhaps combined, where necessary, with simple filling replacement or a little composite-artistry to re-shape teeth.

And yes, it does us good too, as health professionals to see people no longer straining to keep their upper lip down whilst talking, or habitually bringing a hand up to hide their teeth…to see them smiling more widely and freely than they have since childhood, and to know this has been achieved without damage to healthy tooth tissue.

Modern dentistry. What’s not to love?

Next, I’ll explain how tooth-whitening works, the different methods available and how NOT to have it done!

Take care!
Lubna

NOW smile

The British Orthodontic Society’s National Orthodontic Week takes place between 22 and 28 February 2011. The highlight of the campaign is an event at the V & A Museum of Childhood in London during half term, when the gallery is visited by over 2,000 people a day. Throughout the week you will be able to ‘Meet an Orthodontist’ and ask questions about orthodontic treatment.

The focus for NOW 2011 will be young people and during the campaign the BOS aims to highlight the problems of dealing with protruding teeth. Two young winners of the BOS annual Against the Odds competition, who have both had to overcome seemingly insurmountable problems related to their protruding teeth, will be acting as figureheads for the campaign and it is hoped their success stories will inspire others to seek help.

To graphically illustrate the problems of protruding teeth the BOS has commissioned the building of two life-size Lego heads showing mouths ‘before’ and ‘after’ orthodontic treatment, and these will be unveiled at the launch and will be on display at the Museum of Childhood during NOW. A competition will be held during the event to encourage visitors to guess the number of Lego bricks it took to build both faces. The winner will be awarded a children’s sonic toothbrush – Sonicare For Kids - produced by Philips.

Competition lovers will be drawn to the recipe challenge on the NOW website which is designed to encourage people to come up with delicious brace friendly dishes. A selection of the best will be featured as downloadable fact sheets on the NOW website and it is intended that these will form the basis for a brace-friendly recipe leaflet to be published by the BOS in the coming months. The ultimate winner of this competition will also win an adult’s Sonicare toothbrush, so it is worth logging onto the NOW website to find out how to enter.

For more information visit www.nowsmile.org

Issued on behalf of the BOS by Positive Communications.

Holistic Dentistry

Although don’t like this term, to me it is simply that all I do should promote optimal health of the whole body, the whole person, making them happier, healthier. It is now established that the health of your mouth has an effect on the health of your heart and hence, your whole being… So holistic means using materials that don’t interfere with your body’s natural balance (that are not toxic) using appropriate techniques with care and skill that protect you from harm. Holistic for me starts with taking more time, from listening, to going the extra mile to make things as perfect as possible… recognising that every person is different and giving patients enough information and all the options so they can make an informed decision.

This is how we practice dentistry at True.

Best wishes!

Lubna

Meet Angela

Meet Angela, our efficient and multitasking practice manager here at True Dentistry

Name: Angela Butler

Job title: Practice Manager

Family: I have a wonderful husband, Paul, to whom I have been married for 32 years and a beautiful daughter Sarah. We have a wonderful granddaughter, Olivia, who is 2 ½ years old all I can say is that my life has been blessed, she is amazing!

Hobbies: spending as much time as possible with my granddaughter, walking, holidays, and finally just joined the gym!!

Holidays: I would love to visit more of Egypt, but may be not just now. We have been lucky enough to experience all the true adventures of the Nile and visit numerous temples which are absolutely amazing.

Goals for 2011:

  • I have just joined the gym and found it life-changing. Just having that “me” time feels like heaven….. Let’s see how long it lasts and how my body copes?
  • Weddings are a nightmare…my daughter is getting married in June and try sitting down sorting all the wedding invites on a budget!!
  • Professional goals for 2011: My aspirations this year are to have a “Zoom” whitening treatment ready for the big day and also a make-over. I’m hoping that Lubna can sort this out for me, I believe with Botox and derma fillers that miracles can happen!
  • I want to bring True Dentistry to more people than ever before. I’m really excited about our new facial aesthetics room and developing that side of the practice.

We are also in the process of decorating and kitting out “Angela’s Suite”…. Watch this space!

Warm regards

Angela

Meet Tracy, our Wonderful Hygienist

Name: Tracy Smith

Job title: Dental Hygienist

Hobbies: Gym, cycling, microlighting with my husband

Pets: Crazy family catcalled Polly. She is 21, unfortunately she is as deaf as a post but still as fit as a fiddle and makes us laugh.

Children: Two amazing children Ellie aged 10 and Jason aged 15. Both very challenging at the moment in different ways, but make my life complete. A JOY!

I got married in November 1990 to Ian. It was a small white wedding followed by a lovely reception looking over the Irish sea (in winter, not very picturesque). Then we enjoyed an amazing honeymoon in Florida!

Holidays: We are hoping to have a week in Barcelona in July and skiing in December if all goes to plan.

Personal goals for 2011: This year I am trying hard to improve my fitness, as I am not getting any younger. I have been given goals by my trainer and am doing quite well so far. Am hoping to participate in ‘Race for Life’ this year with my daughter, it is only 5 kilometres but I have to start somewhere.

Apart from improving my fitness, I would to relax more and not let the little things bother me. To be the best I can be in my work, which I still really enjoy even after 26 years. This summer I hope to do some home improvements especially in my kitchen, in the process of planning changes, quite excited!

Meet Lubna at True Dentistry

This week we want to introduce you to the team behind True Dentistry. Today, please meet Lubna, our principal dentist.

Lubna - Principal dentist at True Dentistry

Name: Lubna Alam-Orths

Job title: Principal dentist

Hobbies:

  • Learning more about the art and science of dentistry (this never feels like ‘work’ to me). The art is about understanding people, communication, the beauty of a smile, doing everything beautifully in dentistry. The science is all about staying at the forefront of techniques, skills, materials and bringing them to True.
  • I love reading books
  • Really interested in health and well-being in general
  • Shopping with my girls…I can’t help it, it’s in the genes!
  • Spending time together as a family is so important to me, especially after losing my father last year. Every day is precious!
  • Cooking. But with my girls developing an interest in cooking, I am spoilt every now and then with wonderful meals from them.

Family: I have 2 wonderful daughters: Farah, 16 and Iman, 13. My lovely husband, Thomas, is a high performance business coach and travels a great deal to his international clients.

Personal goals for 2011: THIS year I WILL (!) go to the gym more often. I enjoy Pilates because it makes me feel great so I need to do more! I’m also thinking of trying out Zumba. I definitely want to go for Invisalign FOR ME(!) this year. I have been talking about it forever, and keep completing other people’s smiles and thinking “I would have finished by now….” So this year, a perfect straight smile for me too! I am also going to have some more Zoom whitening again. I must remember to ask Tracy to keep some time free for me and get it done!

This year I’ll also be supporting our daughter, Farah, through her GCSEs and helping Iman with homework, sport and posting videos of her singing on YouTube – she has a beautiful voice! I also want to spend more quality time with my mum.

Holidays: Thomas will be travelling all over Europe again, working really hard, so we need to plan some time away for us as a family – weekends and a holiday. We have some ideas but still need to finalise them.

Professional goals for 2011: I am very excited about launching our facial aesthetics room at the practice! Our team often takes part in courses for Continuous Professional Development, to help us deliver the best and most up to date patient-care. Our next course will be on hygiene and cross-infection control and the team is giving up a Saturday to do this, which is great!
